Alexis Madrigal - The Fake Magazines Used in Blade Runner Are Still Futuristic, Awesome
Basic Googling various combinations of Blade Runner and magazines with some other keywords yielded nothing. So, I took the image of Dorgon Magazine and ran it through Google Images to see if it had shown up anywhere else with more information attached. It had indeed been posted a few times around the web including at a site for Manahan Design, where they were presented as custom Kindle screensavers for jailbroken devices. But down at the bottom of that site, there was a little inscription: “Much credit goes to Kevin From the Propsummit forums for his amazingly made high-res reproductions of the magazine covers seen in various locations in Blade Runner,” we read. Who is this mysterious, Kevin? And what is Propsummit? And are these covers actually *recreations* by someone who looked at the magazines in the film and somehow designed from anew from scratch? Are these completely new design fiction objects modeled on old design fiction objects for a movie that came out 30 years ago?

Yes, this is very awesome.

Here We Go Magic picks up a hitchhiking John Waters on I-70 in eastern Ohio
Last night, I interviewed Here We Go Magic in Pittsburgh. This morning they pick up director John Waters in the middle of nowhere, Ohio. Maaaay just have to get a follow up from them now… Read the full story here.

Michael Bloch tells it: “There’s a hydro-fracking boom in western Pennsylvania. You can’t get a motel room. We had to drive til 4AM, and finally found a Days Inn in eastern Ohio. Getting back on the highway this morning, there was a man at the side of the on-ramp with a sign that read ‘to the end of Rte 70.’ Jen wanted to pick him up, but we drove past him. As we passed by, our sound guy said ‘John Waters’ Luke said, ‘Yep, definitely John Waters.’ We got off at the next exit and circled back. He was still there. We pulled up, opened the door and asked where he was coming from. ‘Baltimore,’ he said. And we said ‘Get in, sir.’ “

“I became a groupie of the tango bands, I went to the low dives. I lost my virginity, which was a wonderful event!” — 1988 Mother Jones interview with Mexican author Carlos Fuentes, who died yesterday.  (via motherjones)

“The importance of learning to code isn’t so that everyone will write code, and bury the world under billions of lines of badly conceived Python, Java, and Ruby. The importance of code is that it’s a part of the world we live in. I’ve had enough of legislators who think the Internet is about tubes, who haven’t the slightest idea about legitimate uses for file transfer utilities, and no concept at all about what privacy (and the invasion of privacy) might mean in an online space. I’ve had enough of patent inspectors who approve patents for which prior art has existed for decades. And I’ve had enough of judges making rulings after listening to lawyers arguing about technologies they don’t understand. Learning to code won’t solve these problems, but coding does force engagement with technology on a level other than pure ignorance. Coding is a part of cultural competence, even if you never do it professionally. Alsup is a modern hero.” —

HOTEL DOOR HANGERS

HOTEL DOOR HANGERS COLLECTED BY MY GRANDFATHER When my grandfather passed away last year, my family gathered to go through his belongings. He had been in the foreign service and he had filled a whole wall of his study with hotel door hangers from all his travels throughout the world. They’re really beautiful, in aggregate, and I wanted to share. Enjoy.

from MICHAEL LEBOWITZ, the Founder and CEO of Big Spaceship in Brooklyn, NY. via his blog: Making More Dots

anthropologie:

Whenever Michael Lebowitz’s grandfather would travel abroad, he would bring home the hotel door hanger as a keepsake. When he passed away, Michael gathered and organized them into this collection.

Hell yes.  Listen to John Peel’s legendary vinyl collection! This is exciting stuff for crate diggers around the world. Says the archive director Tom Barker:

After some deliberation we decided that the best way to start the process was to release the details of the first 100 albums, listed alphabetically, from each letter of the alphabet each week. So on 1st May we will release the first 100 A’s, on 8th May the first 100 B’s, 15th May first 100 C’s, and so on.
We also hope that by doing it on a week by week basis, you will keep coming back week after week, eager and excited to explore more of John’s collection.

This website is pretty incredible.
